A mathematical relation can be described in many ways: in words, with a graph, with points or numbers and in some cases with an equation. Today we will learn to describe 5 properties of these relations: linear vs non-linear, discrete vs continuous, domain, range and whether a relation is a special type called a function.
Warm Up
Please collect and finished your corrections for the Unit 3 test if you have not done so already. When finished please complete your first HW assignment of this unit: puzzle 1 and puzzle 2 and practice to master the first 3 topics under "online practice" for Unit 4 in Khan Academy.
Lesson - Analyzing Relations
First let's look at the 5 characteristics as they relate to a variety of examples (see handout). Next practice writing the characteristics on this graph: "angry graph". Open using "explain everything" and place in your drop box. Clearly label the 5 characteristics on this graph.
Next we'll do a bit of practice - Lesson 3 worksheet (both sides). If finished work on mastering the first 5 topics from the "online" practice in Unit 4 Khan Academy. Also, this unit I will be looking for students who are interested in putting in extra work (this will count towards their "mathematical reasoning" mark and be used toward your grade. Under class files look for "problems of the week" - if you work on these - hand in your work to me directly (or if you prefer in drop box but clearly label it). I will also use these towards your work habits, especially if you use these to prepare to write this year's grade 10 math competition Feb. 21st.
Wrap Up
Today we will complete an "exit slip" to see what you have learned.
